VibeMate/AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) Warn Feature 2.0: Blackstone

Blackstone is a creator-controlled intervention layer for live and interactive communities. Inspired by the familiar escalation model of AIM’s Warn feature, it gives creators a practical middle ground between tolerating disruptive behavior and publicly banning a user.

Today’s moderation tools are mostly binary: let someone continue disrupting a space, or block them outright. Both choices can escalate the situation, interrupt the room, and pull attention away from the creator. Blackstone introduces a quieter option: progressive, private limits that reduce a bad actor’s ability to dominate the conversation while allowing the community to continue uninterrupted.

A creator or verified moderator can apply escalating constraints directly from the chat interface:

Vibe Check: The user moves into a strict message cooldown—for example, one message every five minutes.
Quiet Lock: Continued behavior triggers a deeper restriction, such as one message every fifteen minutes.
Temporary Read-Only Mode: Repeated violations result in a defined cooling-off period before further moderation action is considered.

The intervention is intentionally low-drama. Rather than announcing a public ban, Blackstone quietly limits the disruptive user’s reach. The creator gains space to continue their stream, the rest of the community avoids a spectacle, and the user receives a clear opportunity to reset their behavior.

The AIM connection is more than nostalgia. AIM understood that online behavior needs graduated consequences, not just an on/off switch. Blackstone modernizes that idea with creator-first permissions, transparent moderation controls, and safeguards designed for today’s communities.

The system must be asymmetric by design: only the creator and verified moderators can apply restrictions. Viewers cannot “warn” one another, eliminating the risk of coordinated “warn wars,” retaliation, or harassment disguised as moderation. Every intervention should be logged, rate-limited, and tied to clear community guidelines.

For Lovense, the hardware opportunity should remain strictly opt-in and consent-based. Haptic feedback can serve as a neutral acknowledgment of a user’s own status change or a creator’s control action—but never as an involuntary punishment mechanism. The core value is creator agency and safer interaction, not turning moderation into a weapon.

Blackstone’s promise is simple: give creators faster, calmer control of their space without forcing them to choose between chaos and confrontation.

Recommended next step: prototype the creator dashboard flow, escalation states, permission model, and user-facing messaging with a small creator-safety beta. Success should be measured by creator confidence, reduced repeat disruptions, moderation workload, appeal rates, and overall chat quality.
